Protective Styling or a Contradiction??
One form of protective styling when you are natural is weaves. Now I know you're thinking:
- A WEAVE? But aren't you NATURAL?
- You are only wearing longer hair because you are insecure.
- What happened to the whole natural beauty thing
First off, people with natural hair do not all fit into the same "box." We all choose to do different styles, use different products, and live our life differently. Having "natural hair" generally means having hair free of texture altering chemicals, nothing else.
Now when your hair is natural, it helps to protective style. Protective styling is used to protect your natural hair and preserve your ends, for length retention and low manipulation. These styles may include any style that protects your ends, does not damage or tug the hair on your hairline, and require little to no manipulation for a substantial period of time.
So, do I think being natural and wearing extensions is a contradiction?
NO. As long as you embrace your natural hair and your natural beauty, it does NOT matter how you wear your hair. And if you choose to protect it, and take care of it while the extensions are in, even better!
